As Earth Week Winds Down…

by Erin Marchesano 25. April 2013 16:32

AHMC would like to recognize a state and a program that has marked the beginning of a new era in preserving our environment. Texas is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its very own Adopt-a-Highway Volunteer Program and AHMC would like to applaud them on such a positive achievement. The first of its kind and highly successful, Adopt-a-Highway in Texas has laid the foundation for programs alike not only across the nation, but across the world!

What started out as a pilot program in 1985 has now grown into a nationally-recognized program and it was just 25 years ago when the first stretch of roadway was adopted in Texas.  Adopt-a-Highway volunteers keep the Texas-born program going strong with currently more than 4,500 groups across the state who remove trash and debris from the state’s roadways.

AHMC would like to recognize the thousands of volunteers who make a difference and we commend the passion that Texans have for keeping their state beautiful. For additional information about the Texas Adopt-a-Highway program and its history, visit their website here.

Not only does Texas have a successful Adopt-a-Highway program, the state has also launched a nationally recognized campaign for litter removal along state highways.

History of the Campaign: (website)

Back in 1985, Texas had a big problem with litter on the side of the highways. To battle this big, expensive roadside mess, the Texas Highway Commission launched an extensive public education campaign. Using research, we identified the state’s worst offenders and how best to reach them, and with that — the legend was born. We’ve been encouraging Texans to keep litter off the roads ever since.

From the beginning, Don’t mess with Texas has been a great success, using iconic Texas celebrities to help spread our message. We’ve enlisted the help of singers like Willie Nelson and George Strait, athletes like George Foreman and Randy White, and even a stealthy World War II-era B-17 bomber to remind Texans what Don’t mess with Texas really means.

Whether the message shows up on a billboard, TV, or computer screen, we’re proud of our advertising. Not only has it successfully captured the Texan spirit and garnered lots of attention and exposure for the campaign, it’s also helped keep tons of litter off Texas roads. To us, it really doesn’t get much better than that.

Programs and people like this have become a huge inspiration for what we do here at AHMC and we are so happy to be able to offer similar opportunities to sponsors in all 20 of our fast growing markets. While Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation is not a volunteer program like Texas Adopt-a-Highway, we still provide companies and organizations the opportunity to brand their name and logo while supporting the community that they work and live.

(And we pick up all the trash!)

Earth day was created to bring public attention to our earth's most precious resources and AHMC would like to recognize all of the businesses and sponsors who support programs like Adopt a Highway and Sponsor a Highway to help maintain a clean and lasting environment for us as well as generations to come.

Happy Earth Week!

Earth Day is Every Day at AHMC!

by Adopt A Highway 19. April 2013 18:39

Every year on Earth Day, people take a moment to reflect on what they can do to keep our planet healthy. Fortunately, there are people who feel that one day is simply just not enough to make significant impact. Our sponsors support a program that pulled 144,094 bags of garbage off the highway last year, which is roughly the weight of 24 elephants! That’s nearly 240 tons! Not only are highways beautified, but trash is sorted and recycled. We do this all year long, and we have been doing it for over 23 years. So on this Earth Day, we would like to say thank you to all  our sponsors, who go beyond the day to make a difference for us all!

We also want to take a quick moment to give a shout out to some of our office staff here who also go a little bit out of their way to make a difference. Thank you, Carol Blunden, Joe De La Riva, and Brian Szatkowski! Our office superstars who are not only constantly competing with each other for our empty soda cans but they also e-cycle old batteries, keeping them out of landfills where they turn into hazardous waste! Every little bit helps, and when you have a lot of people doing a little bit, the difference is huge!

How Can Saying “Thank You” Strengthen Your Business Sales and Negotiation Skills?

by Erin Marchesano 15. March 2013 14:30

Sales and marketing are two things in every business that go hand in hand. However, it is primarily and ultimately the sales team that is responsible for increasing a company’s revenue through their methods and practices when working with potential customers on a day-to-day basis.

At AHMC, our sales team goes through extensive weekly training to work on negotiation skills, how to convert leads, how to build relationships with potential sponsors and keep lasting relationships with old ones… the list goes on.

While all jobs and career paths require some form of ongoing education, sales is an area of business that needs it more extensively than most. With consumer trends always changing and a fluctuating economy, sales managers and directors need to stay on top of their company representatives making sure they are as educated as they can be in all circumstances.

We recently came across an article written by a member of Ahern & Associates, LTD; a management consulting firm that specializes in transportation. Being that AHMC’s primary form of business is on some of the busiest highways across the country, we have subscribed to their blog for a different take on some of these sales and marketing perspectives that we’ve been looking into ourselves.

The main topic of the article is “How do you strengthen your sales and negotiation skills?” but the article itself is filled with a lot of really good information about the power to success and how sales is all about attitude and being prepared to build lasting relationships with customers through the humility of saying “thank you” and showing appreciation for their time and efforts.

A couple key points that really stood out to us from the article and some things to really consider when taking a different approach to our company’s sales efforts are listed below:

Failure is never a failure.

It is only a learning experience in which negative feedback is simply there to help us change our approach or course of action when working with current or potential customers. You must change your attitude toward the word “no” so that rather than seeing it as a form of failure, you see it as an opportunity to play to win by taking a better approach that will work the next time.

One thing you must learn to be successful, not only in sales, but also in life… is to always say “Thank You.”

By treating a customer with nothing less than 110% of your efforts, lets them know that they are important to you and your business. (Let’s face it, without customers there would be no business!) Saying thank you shows a customer that you don’t take them for granted and the day you stop doing this, is the day that your business will start losing customer loyalty, customer relationships, and ultimately… sales.

At AHMC we try very hard to show our Sponsors that we appreciate their business in as many ways possible. Without them, we would not be the company that we are today and it is important that there is always a win-win for every relationship we build with our Sponsors.

From providing “Sponsor Highlights” on our blog and Facebook, to sending out personally written Christmas and Thank You cards, we want our Sponsors to know that they are appreciated and their business means something to us.

So in conclusion I borrowed a quote from the article that I thought was quite fitting:

“Never take advantage of a relationship… because it takes years to build one and seconds to lose one.”

Thank You to all of our Sponsors! Thank You to everyone who reads our blog! And Thank You to everyone who continues to support AHMC year after year!
